Why pH Matters as Much as Chlorine Dose
Chlorine's disinfecting effectiveness is strongly pH-dependent — at higher pH, a larger share of dosed chlorine exists in a less effective form, meaning you need more chlorine to achieve the same disinfection at poorly-controlled pH than at well-controlled pH. This is why a pool program manages pH and chlorine together, not as separate concerns.
Shock Treatment and Algae Control
Potassium permanganate and higher-dose chlorine treatments ("shock dosing") are used periodically to oxidize organic contamination and control algae growth beyond what routine disinfection dosing handles. This is typically a scheduled maintenance step rather than a daily one.
