What is PAC, and what does IS 15573 cover?

Poly aluminium chloride (PAC, CAS 1327-41-9) is a pre-hydrolysed aluminium coagulant used to remove turbidity, suspended solids and colour from water and wastewater. Basicity describes how far the aluminium is pre-neutralised; PAC generally consumes less alkalinity and depresses pH less than alum at a comparable aluminium dose.

IS 15573:2018 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for polyaluminium chloride. The SunPac SC11 specification lists, for each parameter, the limit and the annex of IS 15573:2018 that gives its test method — including aluminium content, basicity, chloride, sulphate, insolubles, pH and limits for mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead, iron, manganese, chromium, selenium and total organic carbon.

Values and test-method references from the SunPac SC11 specification sheet. SunPac SC12 (pale yellow powder, 25 kg PP bags) is specified on core parameters: Aluminium as Al₂O₃ (%) 28.0 min; Relative Basicity (%) 35.0 min; Chloride as Cl (%) 36.0 max; Bulk Density (g/mL) 0.65 min; pH of 5% Solution 2.5 – 4.5.

Applications

Where SunPac is used

Water clarification

Coagulant for raw-water and process-water clarification in municipal and industrial plants.

Turbidity & suspended solids

Removal of turbidity and suspended solids ahead of filtration.

Effluent treatment

Primary coagulation in industrial effluent treatment, often followed by a anionic polyelectrolyte.

Colour removal

Together with SunDec decolorant in dye-bearing effluent.

Dosing and documents

The right dose depends on the raw water or effluent. Run a jar test first, and see PAC grades explained.

The specification sheet and MSDS for each grade are downloadable below. A certificate of analysis for the supplied batch is available with your order.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is IS 15573:2018?

IS 15573:2018 is the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification for polyaluminium chloride. It sets requirements and test methods for parameters such as aluminium content, basicity, impurities and heavy metals.

Is SunPac SC11 specified against IS 15573:2018?

Yes. The SunPac SC11 specification sheet lists each parameter with its limit and the IS 15573:2018 annex used as the test method.

What is the aluminium content of SunPac SC11?

Aluminium as Al₂O₃ is 28.0% minimum, with relative basicity 35.0% minimum, per the SunPac SC11 specification sheet.

What is the difference between SunPac SC11 and SC12?

Both are pale yellow PAC powders with 28.0% minimum Al₂O₃ and 35.0% minimum basicity. SC11 is specified against IS 15573:2018 including heavy-metal and TOC limits; SC12 is specified on core parameters and supplied in 25 kg PP bags.

What is the shelf life of SunPac?

24 months from the date of manufacturing, per the specification sheets. Store sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture.

Is SunPac part of Sun Brand?

Yes. SunPac is part of Sun Brand, the trademarked water-treatment range of Suraj Chemicals, Chennai.
